About this work
A colored political caricature titled Liberty, published in 1903 by John Samuel Pughe, shows the Statue of Liberty with a caricatured human face, spiked crown, and a torch labeled Lawlessness. The statue holds a tablet reading Tyranny and wears a sash labeled Walking Delegate, while a crowd of immigrants on the shore looks up at it as steamships arrive. A sign on a distant island reads To the Land of the Free.
