About this work
A colour lithographic cartoon titled The grim commander by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1904. A towering skeleton in a dark captain's uniform and cap leans over a crowd boarding a paddle steamer, gesturing toward a pile of life preservers with a sign reading that they are all right, inspected 1891. The crowd gathers beneath an arch reading Wooden Steamboat Co. and a banner for an annual Sunday school excursion.
