About
Artnap is a website that collects public domain artworks released by museums and libraries under open access programs and makes them free to download. The archive holds more than 340,000 paintings, drawings, prints and posters by more than 37,000 artists. The images come from the open access collections of museums such as the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and from Wikimedia Commons. The Museums page lists them with the number of works from each.
Each artwork page names the museum that holds the work, the source of the image and the license. Most works are in the public domain in the United States or were released by their museum under the CC0 dedication. A small number of photographs carry a Creative Commons Attribution license, and their pages give the credit that the license requires.
Standard downloads are JPEG files up to 2,500 pixels on the long side. They are free, need no account and carry no watermark. Artnap Pro, a paid subscription, adds the master file supplied by the museum, which is often several times larger. Pro costs $9.99 a month, or $7.99 a month billed yearly.
The site also publishes the Journal, a series of articles on individual works written from the holding museums' own texts. Other sections contain printable coloring pages made from prints and drawings, and wallpapers for phones and desktops. Artnap New Tab is an extension for Google Chrome that shows a public domain painting in each new browser tab, with its title, artist and museum; it is on the Chrome Web Store.
