About this work

A colour lithographic political cartoon by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1896, titled ‘Blowing’ himself around the country. A well-dressed man leans from a red trolley car, blowing a large megaphone labelled 16 to 1 toward a crowd of caricatured onlookers, while passengers read newspapers such as The Daily Windbag and The Morning Bazoo. Telegraph linemen work on poles above, and the crowd gestures excitedly as text in the sky reads that the people know it all.
