About this work
A chromolithographic political cartoon titled The four Rips; or, twenty years behind the age, by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1885. Four ragged, long-bearded figures with rifles and satchels labeled with newspaper names approach a storefront marked Uncle Sam's Inter-State Market, where a top-hatted Uncle Sam sits at a counter beside a figure in a wide-brimmed hat. Background shows a harbor with sailing ships and a city of factories, while a horse-drawn wagon and seated figures appear at the right.
