About this work
A chromolithographic political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1885, shows a crowd of top-hatted politicians on a rocky hillside gazing toward the Capitol dome, White House and Treasury buildings. Flags read 'Civil Service Reform' and 'No Removals Except for Cause,' while broken stone tablets inscribed with commandment text lie in the foreground.
