About this work
A colored lithograph by Bernhard Gillam from 1882 shows a ghostly figure with a shroud floating above a city street lined with 'For Sale' signs and a flag reading 'Auction This Day.' Below, a man with a hammer posts a notice reading 'Selling Out' by order of H. Hilton, while a second man in a striped suit and top hat stands beside an open hat containing papers marked 'Incompetent' and 'Poor Judgement.' A coffin in the lower right bears the inscription 'Sacred to the Memory of A.T. Stewart.'
