About this work
A colored political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1883, shows a mounted figure in a plumed hat leading a long procession of ragged paupers, convicts, and labeled groups, while crying babies stand at the lower left. Hay-bound sticks labeled notoriety, sensationalism, and controversies lie on the ground in the foreground, and a man in a top hat labeled Solid South watches from the right.
