About this work

A hand-colored caricature shows a top-hatted man seated on a coffin, playing dice with a cloaked skeletal figure of Death while surrounded by disasters including a sinking steamship, a burning city block, a theater panic, and a collapsed building. Papers labeled insurance money and heavily insured are scattered around, and the work is credited to Bernhard Gillam and dated 1883.
