About this work

A colored lithograph by Currier & Ives, dated 1878, shows the Pacific Coast Steamship Co.'s steamer State of California under full sail and steam over rough, dark waves. Passengers line the decks and lifeboats hang along the side, with the American flag flying at the stern. The printed lettering beneath names the vessel and its general agents, Goodall, Perkins & Co. of San Francisco.
