About this work
A chromolithographic political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1883, shows a crowded graveyard with tombstones bearing inscriptions such as 'Here Lies My Irish Influence' and 'Here Lie My Victims, Their Name Is Legion.' Caricatured figures in period dress lay wreaths and flowers among the stones, while uniformed soldiers and a drummer march nearby beneath a large tree.
