About this work
A hand-colored lithograph titled Building the ark by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1884, shows a robed figure on a cliff directing workers who assemble a large ark-like frame of planks labeled with tariff and trade slogans such as Tariff Reform, Raw Materials Free, and Lower Tax on Woolens. Below, a crowd of bearded men in classical dress plays pipes, lyres, and cymbals, while a figure in a Free Trade Plank sign sits among the timbers.
