About this work
A colored lithographic caricature shows an elderly man in a plaid suit seated atop a heap of dollar-marked money bags, coins and banknotes. Around him, a college president, a clergyman holding a collection box labeled for the church, and a crowd of figures wearing sashes reading relative reach toward him, as a child in a graduate's cap looks on. The work is titled The crabbed millionaire's puzzle, by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1901.
