About this work
A colored lithographic cartoon titled "Putting his foot down" by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1899. Uncle Sam stands over a large map of China holding a paper labeled "Trade Treaty with China," while caricatured European figures representing Germany, Italy, Britain, Russia and France kneel and cut at the map with shears. A pagoda-style building and a flag appear on the hillside at right.
