About this work
A lithographic cartoon by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1899, shows a barker in a dark suit at a tent entrance presenting a row of grotesque attractions on painted banners, including a gold bug, a red money devil, a robed figure holding a U.S. Supreme Court scroll, a hog labeled as an educated wild hog of Texas, a fire-eater, and a trust octopus. A crowd of top-hatted men watches from the foreground, and the scene is titled Opening of the Democratic dime museum for 1900.
