About this work
A chromolithographic caricature by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1883, shows a marble hall populated by classical-costumed political figures gathered around a pedestal labeled Patronage. A sheep labeled Civil Service Reform lies beside it while a figure pours a libation, and a statue of Neptune and a distant Treasury building appear in the background.
