About this work
A colour lithograph by Bernhard Gillam from 1885, titled Richelieu's defiance, shows a richly decorated interior where a cardinal-like figure in an orange cape clasps a woman in a white gown sashed Civil Service. Opposite them, a group of men in exaggerated seventeenth-century dress, several with labelled sashes and hats, gesture and recoil, one holding a list headed Bad Appointments.
