About this work
This hand-colored political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1884, depicts a dramatic scene of armed slave hunters and dogs pursuing and capturing Black figures in a field of tall grass. A man in a dark coat holds a banner reading "No Interference with Slave-Hunters!" while three men in top hats and cloaks watch from the left, and a printed resolution sits in the foreground.
