About this work
A colour political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam from 1885 shows a crowded interior where a tall, mustached statesman stands beside a large scroll titled as a new declaration of independence. Crowds of besuited men in top hats gesture and recoil around him, while a framed painting of the 1776 Declaration of Independence hangs on the wall behind. The printed text on the scroll reads as a renunciation of party allegiance.
