About this work
A hand-colored satirical political map from 1877 by Frederick W. Rose, published in London by G.W. Bacon. Russia is drawn as a giant octopus whose tentacles reach across Europe and Asia, while national figures such as Turkey, Persia and Norway are personified in caricature. The explanatory text panels at left and bottom key the allegorical figures to their nations.
