About this work

This triptych print by Toyokuni Utagawa, dated to the early 1790s, shows several women engaged in clothing work inside and beside a house. Figures stitch, fold, and lay out patterned kimono fabric on tatami mats, while a brazier and kettle sit in the central room and a garden with rocks and a fence appears at right. Poetic inscriptions in cloud-shaped cartouches fill the upper portions of the sheet.
