About this work
A hand-colored Japanese woodblock print shows a tea house interior opening onto a balcony with figures in patterned kimono seated and conversing. Beside the building, a river with curving currents runs past rows of wooden benches where visitors sit, and pedestrians walk along the stone-edged bank. Nishimura Shigenaga's Tea House Beside the Kamo River in Kyoto was made in the 1740s.
