About this work
A seated bearded man in a loose robe rests on his knees, gazing sideways with a stern expression, and holds a long pipe that extends across the lower right of the sheet. The figure is rendered in gray ink washes with light touches of color on the face, and a red seal sits at the right. This sketch is plate 13 from the album of Utagawa Hiroshige, dated ca. 1850.
