In 1832 Hiroshige joined an official procession to Kyoto and sketched the scenery along the Tōkaidō road. Back in Edo, he turned those sketches into The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, which contains some of his best-known prints. He was born in Edo in 1797, took over his father's post as fire warden at twelve and trained under Toyohiro of the Utagawa school. He made over 8,000 works but was never wealthy, and his will left instructions for paying his debts. Vincent van Gogh copied two prints from his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
