About this work
A colour lithographic caricature by Bernhard Gillam from 1885 reworks the parable of the Good Samaritan as political satire. A robed figure on a donkey tends to a half-naked man whose sash reads "Civil Service," while a figure labelled "Arthur" in a red cloak walks ahead and a third figure holds a scroll marked "Patronage" and a bag of "Gold Dust." The rocky desert setting with palms and cactus frames the scene.
