About this work
A chromolithographic political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1884, shows a crowd of caricatured men in top hats and frock coats running down a cobbled street in pursuit of a figure clutching papers and a bag. Protest placards read 'Down with Cleveland the Monopolist' and 'Beware of Cleveland the Monopolist,' while a bulldog snaps at the runners and a man lies sprawled on the pavement.
