About this work
A colored cartoon print shows a stern, bald man in a red shirt holding a raised axe in a dense forest, his belt labeled "Land Grafter." Around him lie felled logs and stumps, while small figures labeled "Dummy Homesteader" are shown sawing, sprawled, or sitting among the timber. Carl Hassmann's 1907 print, titled "The massacre of the trees," uses this caricature to depict the illegal acquisition of public timberland.
