About this work
This chromolithographic allegorical map presents a birds-eye view of a social reform scheme, with a central lighthouse labeled Salvation in a stormy sea filled with struggling figures. Labels above and beside it contrast a Farm Colony and City Colony with emigration routes and vices such as drink, crime and despair. The work is titled In Darkest England and the Way Out, attributed to William Booth, dated 1890.
