About this work
A Japanese woodblock print shows a seated woman in a blue patterned kimono writing at a low desk, while a standing figure in a robe decorated with butterflies and flowers looks on. Wisteria branches and pale rectangular paper panels fill the background. This print by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), dated 1851-1853, is titled Prince Genji and lady-in-waiting.
