Kunisada's family ran a small ferry service in Honjo, an eastern district of Edo, and that income gave him time to paint. He joined the workshop of Toyokuni I in 1800 or shortly after. About 60% of his designs show kabuki actors, and he also made a great many prints of beautiful women. Western collectors long saw his work as inferior and some called it decadent, but that view only began to change in the 1990s. He died in January 1865 in the same neighbourhood where he was born.
