About this work
A hand-coloured celestial plate shows the constellation Ursa Major depicted as a brown bear walking across a deep blue sky, with yellow stars marking its body and pale blue lines linking the star positions. The bear's head, paws and tail are rendered in fine engraved detail. This print is attributed to Johann Bayer and dated 1624.
