About this work
A hand-coloured celestial chart shows a lion in profile, with its mane, paws and tail rendered in warm golden-brown tones against a deep blue sky. Stars are marked with yellow starburst symbols, Greek letter labels and faint horizontal bands, with two white lines crossing the field. This 1603 print by Johann Bayer depicts the constellation Leo.
