About this work

A hand-colored celestial chart shows the constellation Hydra as a long, coiled serpent with a red-tinged open mouth, set against deep blue sky. Stars are rendered as yellow starbursts with Greek letter labels, and a pale band of the Milky Way crosses the lower right. This print by Johann Bayer dates to 1624.
