About this work
A hand-coloured star chart shows the constellation Canis Major, depicted as a brown dog with a jeweled collar set against a deep blue sky, with a white band of the Milky Way crossing the field. A white bird and a sprig of foliage appear in the lower right, and the stars are rendered as golden points with radiating halos. This plate is attributed to Johann Bayer and dated 1603.
