About this work
A hand-coloured star chart shows a large red crab, the constellation Cancer, drawn over a blue night sky with stars marked as glowing gold discs. Faint horizontal bands and white lines cross the composition, suggesting the celestial grid and ecliptic. This print by Johann Bayer is dated 1603.
