About this work
A hand-colored star chart from Johann Bayer's 1603 atlas shows the constellation Ara as a flaming altar or incense burner standing on a pale band of the Milky Way. Gold star symbols mark the stars, and a red curved line crosses the dark blue sky above the altar.
