About this work

This hand-colored star chart from 1603 by Johann Bayer depicts the constellation Argo Navis as a richly decorated ancient ship with a tall mast, billowing sails, and rows of oars dipping into turbulent blue-green waves. Gold star symbols and blue guide lines are overlaid on the vessel, while two figures stand on the deck beside a rocky cliff at left.
