About this work

A multi-panel satirical print from 1907 by Samuel Ehrhart, titled The kept newspaper, shows a large central scene of a woman reclining on cushions draped in newspaper beside a writer at a desk, framed by a sinuous decorative border. Surrounding vignettes depict the editor facing his staff, owners conferring over the editorial section, a business manager advising an editorial writer, and an old subscriber reading in a rocking chair. The composition is rendered in colored line drawing with caricatured figures and annotated captions.
