About this work
A colored lithographic caricature shows a crowned, mustachioed man in evening dress, with bills labeled hotel, tailor, and wine pinned to him, gesturing over kneeling women in elaborate gowns who offer dollar-marked money bags and gold coins. Standing onlookers and classical columns frame the scene. The print is titled The European Svengali and the trilbys of the Four Hundred, by Samuel Ehrhart, dated 1895.
