About this work

A colour lithographic caricature shows an elderly bearded man in a dark coat and tall hat seated on a rock, holding a rifle and a Bible while a tide of red-coated British soldiers and Union Jack flags tumbles down a long chute labelled British Empire Shute. Beside him a sign reads Dutch Republic, and across the water a figure with a shovel stands on a headland marked England. The work is titled Too much for him! and was made by John Samuel Pughe in 1900.
