About this work
A colored lithograph titled The rivals by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1908, shows anthropomorphic cats with caricatured human faces gathered on a grassy lawn enclosed by a brick wall. A white cat in the center holds a pink banner reading NOMINATION, while other cats labeled with names jostle on either side, and the domed Capitol rises in the background.
