About this work

A colour lithographic caricature titled The return of Rip Van Winkle, created by John Samuel Pughe in 1907. Stout, well-dressed men in an inn called The Jolly Grafter's Inn, labelled with trusts and special interests such as Beef Trust, Oil Trust and Railroad Merger, drink and laugh while a ragged old man with a long white beard and a gun marked The Law stands before them. A dog labelled Subsidized Press sits at the front, and a newspaper titled The Daily Graft lies on the table.
