About this work
A colored lithograph by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1903, titled The passing of Lent. Three caricatured figures stand in a stone-paved setting: a scowling figure in a brown monastic robe with a knotted cord, a smiling elderly woman in a bonnet and pale gown labeled Democratic Party, and a grinning red-horned devil in a cape labeled Gorman. The scene is set before a Gothic church entrance beside a landscaped shore.
