About this work

A chromolithographic cartoon by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1899, shows a large central figure in an American flag-striped costume and dark coat gesturing toward a matador with a red cape and a bull in an arena. Smaller vignettes around the border depict football, pigeon shooting, prize fighting, a six day bicycle race, and a baseball game with an assault on an umpire.
