About this work
A satirical color print by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1898, shows a stout figure in a top hat and red coat, dressed in a Union Jack waistcoat, seated on a fortified wall with a telescope and a Union Jack flag, watching naval warships. Small caricatured figures labeled Germany, Austria, Italy and France stand on a rocky outcrop gazing toward distant explosions on the water.
