About this work
A chromolithographic political cartoon shows a donkey labeled American Consumer pulling a carriage full of top-hatted men representing trusts such as steel, sugar, beer, tobacco, and lumber. The carriage banner reads Stand Pat Club, and a drum proclaims the tariff will be revised when public welfare demands it. The 1908 print by John Samuel Pughe depicts a dangled carrot labeled Promised Tariff Reform ahead of the donkey.
