About this work
A colour lithographic cartoon titled Declined with thanks, by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1900. Uncle Sam stands in a tailor's shop wearing a star-spangled vest and oversized striped trousers labelled Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Porto Rico, while a small tailor measures him. Three men in top hats at the doorway hold bottles and a barrel marked Anti-Expansion Policy, and the sign reads McKinley and Company National Tailors.
