About this work
A hand-colored political cartoon shows a woman in a star-spangled blue top and striped red-and-white skirt gesturing toward a robed pope in a tall jeweled tiara. The pope bows while holding a banner reading CATHOLICISM, and schools labeled Public School appear on the left beside St. Peter's and the Vatican on the right. The print is titled Declined with thanks, dated 1895, and is signed by John Samuel Pughe.
