About this work
A colored lithograph titled A prospect of over-education, by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1902. Figures in academic caps and gowns perform menial jobs along a busy street, including digging, laying paving stones, painting, selling newspapers, climbing utility poles, and shining shoes, while a well-dressed man reads a newspaper nearby. The shops along the street advertise ales, wines and liquors, fruits and vegetables, and laundry.
