About this work
A colored political cartoon shows a large elephant labeled G.O.P. being pushed against a fence of signs marked Cost of Living for the years 1896, 1900, 1904, and 1908. A heavyset man in a blue cap sits on its back holding a whip and a banner reading Stand Pat, while numerous figures strain to push and pull the animal. The Capitol dome appears in the background. Dated 1907 and attributed to John Samuel Pughe.
